Rainfall Shortages Threaten Costat Rica Power, By Jon Hamilton
    NPR
    February 11, 2008

The artical was about the rainfall shortage in Costa Rica and how it is affecting their power plants which supply 80% of their power. The artical also said that even the slightest change in rainfall paterns can cause huge problems for them, in 2007 TechShop lost power because the reservours dried up.
What would the environmental effects of adding more powerplants (hydro, volcanic, ect.) in places that where once off-limits?

Costa Rica has an incredibly diverse community with 12,000 species of plants, 1,239 species of butterflies, 838 species of birds, 440 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 232 species of mammals. They have a great idea for protecting their rainforests by paying the owners $50 per acre to protect it. Even with the threats of illegal timber harvesting they have done an excellent job in protecting their rainforests.

How did they propose this plan to the community?
What are you doing about all the cattle in Costa Rica that the U.S. basically dropped?
How does the deforestation affect the people of Costa Rica?

    Summary:
Costa Rica is the most diverse region on the earth. 850 different kinds of birds live in the rainforests and those forestd are rapidly being destroyed. With the help of members we can save the rainforests in Costa Rica and save those species in danger of extiction. Planting a tree is all it takes, and the goal to revive these forests is 25,000 trees. 4% of the worlds plant life is in Costa Rica.

    Response:
Cosat Rica is a beautiflu and diverse place and it needss to be helped. People only have to pay 15$ to plant a tree and help save this place. Its sadly not only Costa Rica that is in danger. If I could help save this forest I would. These animals need our help and I am so happy with what they are trying to do to help save these forests.

The ocean near national parks are under a threat, because lawmakers are trying to pass a bill to fish in these restricted areas. Many local fisherman are wanting to pass this bill into law, but environmentalists don’t want it to pass. The fishermen in these restricted areas rely on feeding their families.

Summary: Despite the size of Costa Rica, it has high levels of biological diversity with 12,000 species of plants, 1,239 species of butterflies, 883 species of birds, 440 species of reptiles and amphibians. In 1995, the government presented a plan to protect 18% of the country in national parks another 13% in privately own preserves. most areas are targeted for protection certificates which will anually pay landowners about 50$ for every forest for every acres of trees, (2.5 acres). with the agreement that the forest will be protected. Around two-thirds of Costa Rica’s rainforest are protected.

    Response:
Cosat Rica is a Peacefull and diverse place and it needs to be helped, Alot of people have to pay 15$ to plant a tree and help save this place, it’s a shame really, we should have the rights to be able to plant trees. Its sad really, not only that Costa Rica is in danger. If we could help save this forest we could/would. These animals need our help to rebuild there habitats. We’d be happy with what they are trying to do to help save these forests.

Costa Rica is home to 4% of all the plants, animal and insect species in all the world, 10% of all bird species, and is also one of the migration sites of the north and south american birds. 850 different birds can be spotted in costa Rica, and this is all within the 19,730 square miles.
From the unstationable tourism Agro-industry, mining products, and growing needs for energy, many species are becoming under more and more pressure to survive. some of these species consist of: spider monkey, jaguars, green sea turtle and scarlet macaws. The major culperate for the endagerment of these species is the destruction of the forest.

Article: Bill would legalize fishing in Costa Rica’s national parks
Summary: Costa Rica is trying to get a reform that allows commercial fishing in the waters of national parks and protected marine areas. The 3000+ fishing families argue that the protected area, .64% of all the fishing area, has affected their important source of sustenance. Environment groups argue that the area is too small and that fishes eventually swim out of the protected area, bringing fisherman new fish. The protected area contains species that are reproducing.
Response: The law should not be passed because the protected area is not really that important to the fisherman. Biodiversity in this area is continuing to recover, so opening this area to commercial fishing would affect it. Fisherman are probably attracted to the superfluous amount of fish there, and making fishing legal there would make their job easier. If fisherman are allowed to fish here

The government developed a program to help keep the forests protected by paying landowners $50 per acre of land that they promise to protect. Around 2/3 of Costa Rica’s remaining rainforests are protected. Costa Rica used to be 99% forested, but has now diminished to 35%.

  10. Svetlana says:

My group’s article was called the Neenah Paper to Help Reforest Osa Peninsula. It was about bringing awareness about the environment and helping reforest a conservation property in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, which is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. Neenah Paper and Friend of the Osa and the Natural Resources are also working on protecting the 54 native species of birds in Costa Rica, 18 of which are state conservation priorities and 3 of which are listed as threatened. These are great organizations that will make a big difference.

    Path Of the Jaguar
    By: Mel Whites, March 2009
Summary: Ths article is about a jaguar that leaves his home land forever. It talks about how he wanders into a nearby village and kills some animals so he wouldn’t starve. However, he is found by villagers and shot down by villagers because they think that jaguars are vermin and should be shot on the spot. Because of incidents like these, the breeding of jaguars have dropped by 16 percent. There aren’t any permanent spots for jaguars to stay. Organizations are looking for places to make homes for jaguars, and create an environment that will preserve them.

This article has a connection to what we have been learning in class. Because of human decisions, animals pay the cost, and are slowly losing their land, or do not have a permanent home. Development, like ranchers and factories have driven big cats out of their homes and have weaken food supplies for these animals to survive.
